I saw this little angel in a craft book
I have and thought it was so cute that
I decided to try and make it in PSP. I
hope you will enjoy making her too.
This tutorial is written using PSP7.04
but PSP6 users should be able to follow it also,
except for some of the preset shapes may
have to be different on her dress detail than
those that I have used.
All screenshots and tool locations are
for PSP7 and have been resized and/or the
resolution has been lowered to save on
load time.
This tutorial does use Eye Candy 4000's
Fur on the hair but you could use
other ways to make the hair. I also used
the Texurizer on her dress but with all the
filters in PSP I'm sure you can find one
that you like just as well if you don't have
the Texturizer. The only other filter
I used was the weave filter in PSP which could
be used for all the layers of the dress.
Let's get started....
Open a 850 x 525 transparent. I know it's
large but with the detail we will be putting on
her it helps to be able to see it clearly
without having to zoom in so much.
Preset shape! Oh yeah baby, yeah!! them
wonderful vectors! hehee
Ellipse, Antialias, Checked, Create as
Vector, Checked of course!
Now that we have our flight list Checked.
Let's let those valentine vectors take
flight! *giggle*
Remember to SAVE
often! Don't lose those vectors!
NOTE....nodes can
be changed to Cusp when needed. To change a node type,
activate node by
clicking on it, then right click, Node Type and you will see a list
of types you can
change to.
1.)
Set your foreground (stoke) color to Null
and your background (fill) to a nice skin tone.
I'm using #EDD9C5.
Draw a circle in the upper left of your
canvas, remember to leave enough room to the left
for your arm, hand and for her hair at
the top. You can use the nodes to shape your head
in the area that would be her chin and
cheek area if you wish, but I didn't, I left mine like it
was. Look at the screenshot below #2 if
you'd like to see what my head looks like.
Convert to Raster and rename as head.
2.)
The collar is next, set your background
(fill) to the color of your choice. I'm using
#E067B6.
Same Preset Shape as before. Draw out
an oval under the head. Click on the Object
Selector, then right click on your canvas
and choose Node Edit. Below is a screen-
shot of how I placed my nodes...
Convert to Raster and rename as collar.
3.)
Her arm will be next. Make your head layer
your active layer. Set your background
color to a color of your choice, I'm using
#45BFC3.
Same Preset Shape. Draw out a long horizontal
oval. It should be under your collar layer.
Object Selector, right click on canvas,
Node Edit. Look at the screenshot below to see
how I've placed my nodes...
Convert to Raster and rename to arm.
SAVE!
4.)
Now for the trim around her arm. Make
your head layer your active layer.
Change your background color to the bright
pink #E067B6 if you are using my color
scheme or to the same color you used for
your collar. (Don't mind the collar color on
my screenshot.)
Preset Shapes, same as before. Draw out
a small vertical oval about the same length
as your arm is. Object Selector, right
click on canvas and choose Node Edit. Do the
trim the same way you did the collar.
Screenshot of mine is below...
Convert to Raster and rename as arm trim.
5.)
Now for the basic part of her dress. Make
Layer 1 your active layer. We want the
dress under all the other layers.
Change your background color to a color
of your choice, I'm using #EB196D.
Set your Preset Shapes to Rectangle, all
other settings stay the same as before.
Draw out a large rectangle, bring it to
about where her elbow would be on her arm.
Use the arrows to rotate the rectangle
slightly to the right. Now click on the Object
Selector, right click on your canvas,
choose Node Edit. Here is a screenshot of
the placements of my nodes. NOTE... remember
you can change your nodes to Cusp.
Convert to Raster and rename as dress1.
SAVE!!
6.)
Dress trim..
Make layer 1 your active layer again.
Change to the color you used on your
collar and arm trim #E067B6. Change your
preset shapes back to Ellipse.
Draw out a long vertical oval the length
of the end of your dress. Object
Selector, right click, Node Edit. Now
make the scalloped edge at the end of the
dress like you did for the collar and
arm trim. Convert to Raster when you're
finished and rename to dress trim1.
Look at screenshot below #7 to see my
dress trim1.
7.)
Now for the bottom of our dress. Change
background color to the one you
used for the arms, mine is #45BFC3. Make
layer 1 your active layer.
Preset Shapes set to Rounded Rectangle,
leave the other settings as they are.
Draw a vertical rounded rectangle at the
bottom of your dress, starting just a little
inward from where your dress trim starts
and go all the way to the top of the
dress. Adjust any nodes needed to get
a look you like. Here is what mine looks
like....
Convert to Raster and rename to bottom
dress.
SAVE!
8.)
Make layer 1 your active layer.
Now for her sock and shoe, well actually
just the shoe, we'll put the sock on with the
paint brush later.
Change background color to the color you
used for her dress, mine is #EB196D.
Change your preset shapes tool back to
Ellipse and draw a small oval up at the
top of her dress. Object Selector, right
click, Node Edit. Play with the nodes.
Below is the screenshot of how you want
your nodes....
Convert to Raster and rename to shoe.
9.)
Next is her hand. Set your background
color to the skin color we used on the
face #EDD9C5. Preset Shape, still on Ellipse.
Draw an oval and use the arrows to rotate
the hand a little to the right. You should
have something that looks like this....
Convert to Raster and rename as hand.
SAVE!
10.)
Part 1 of wing..
Go up to the very top layer in your layer
palette and make it your active layer.
Change your background color to #45BFC3
or the color you used for the arm.
Preset Shapes, set to Ellipse, other setting
the same as we've been using.
Just behind her head draw out a horizontal
oval. Object Selector, Right click
on canvas, choose Node Edit. Below is
how the shape of my wing looks...
Convert to Raster and rename as wing1
11.)
Part 2 wing.
Change background color to the deep pink
#EB196D or the color you used for
the dress and shoe. Preset Shapes still
set to Ellipse, draw a horizontal oval at the
end of wing 1. Object Selector, right
click on canvas, Node Edit. Look at the
screenshot below to see how I shaped the
2nd part of my wing....
Convert to Raster and rename to wing 2.
This is what my angel looks like so far...
Yours will be larger than mine, I reduced
the size to save on load time.
SAVE!
How does your basic
angel look?? Pretty plain right now, isn't it? Well we are going to
fix that and make
her into a beautiful angel!
12.)
Let's make her some hair next. Make your
top layer on your layer palette your active
layer. Decide what color you want her
hair to be and set your background color to it,
I used #E8B17C as the base color for mine.
Preset Shapes, set to Ellipse, all other
settings the same as we've been using for this
tutorial. Draw out a horizontal oval on
her head. Object Selector, right click on your
canvas, Choose Node Edit. Start shaping
your oval around the head of your angel, adding
nodes and changing to Cusp where needed.
Screenshot below of where I placed my nodes.
Zoom in if you need to....
Convert to Raster and rename as hair.
13.)
PSP 7 users...
Next let's make her a mouth. I kinda cheated
a little here *L*
Set background color to black. Preset
Shapes, Moon 2, other settings same as before.
Draw out a small narrow moon, use the
hands to rotate the moon so that the wide
part is on the bottom. DO NOT click object
selector stay with the vector box. Now
take the top right node and pull it out
to the left some, do the same thing to the right
one. Put your mouse over the middle top
node until you see the two headed arrow,
click and pull down on it a little until
it looks more like a mouth. When you're happy
convert to raster and rename as mouth.
Now go to your layer palette and lower the
opacity of your mouth layer until you
are happy with the way it looks. I lowered
mine to 31%. Look at the banner image
to see my mouth or below at the screenshot
under #15a.
PSP 6 users that do not have the moon 2
preset.
You can set your fill color to black and
use the draw tool set to 1 or 2 freehand or
bezier curve to draw your mouth. Make
sure you add a new layer naming it mouth.
SAVE!
14.)
Now for the eyes..
I used the draw tool set to line width
1, Antialias checked, Create as a Vector Checked,
Bezier Curve. Draw out a straight line
on either the left or right of her face about where
you think the eye should be. Slightly
pull up on the line to make it set up a little. Click
on the object selector and add a node
towards the outer edge of the line to make the
dip in the eye. When you're happy Convert
to Raster and rename as eyes. Copy this
layer and paste as a new selection on
the other side of the face, while still selected
go to Image, Mirror. Adjust the position
if needed.
15a.)
Nose is next..
Add a new layer naming it nostrils. Draw
Tool, same as for the eyes except UNcheck
Create as a vector. Set background color
to a slightly darker color than we used for
the skin tone. I'm using #DBBCA1. Draw
a small and I do mean small, so zoom in,
vertical line. Pull out on the line to
make kind of a sideways smile. This will be
a hint of the nostrils, rotate using the
deformation tool if you need to. Copy the layer,
paste as a new selection, go to Image,
Mirror. Adjust position if you need to.
SAVE!
15b.)
The rest of the nose! *L* Add a new layer
naming it nose2
Switch your colors so that the brown you
used for the nose is your foreground
color. Airbrush tool to these settings....
Using your nostrils as a guide, spray
a small area up one side of the nose, now do the
other side the same way.
Change to your Retouch Tool with these
settings...
and smudge the sprays a little, here is
a close up of what my nose looks like..
16.)
Now for some rosy cheeks. Set foreground
color to #EB196D. Raise the size of
your airbrush to 16. Add a new layer naming
it cheeks, spray a small area on each side
of her face about where you think her
cheeks should be. Go to Effects, Blur, Gaussian
Blur with a radius of 2.
SAVE!
17.)
Let's do some cutouts on our head and
hand layer. First make your head layer your
active layer. Go to Selection, Select
all, Selections, Float. Go to Effects, 3D Effects,
Cutout and apply a cutout using these
settings... color is #C9A98D.
Select None.
18.)
Make your hand your active layer. Go to
Selection, Select all, Selections, Float. Go
to Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout and apply
a cutout using the settings above except
change the blur to 25.
Select None.
SAVE!
19.)
Let's do the two scalloped edges on her
dress now. Make your dress layer your active
layer. Lower the opacity on this layer
to 40. Set your background color to the same color
as you used on your dress. I'm using #EB196D.
Preset Shapes set to Ellipse, other settings
same as before. Draw out a vertical oval
the width of your dress about where the
first wing meets the second wing. Object selector,
right click on canvas, Node Edit. Do the
right edge of this vector just like you did the
edges for the collar, arm trim and on
the bottom of the dress. On the left side you don't
have to do much but shape to the contour
of your dress so it will blend in, leave a nice
amount of space between the scalloped
edge and the left edge so when we add a cutout
to it we can remove some of it so that
it will blend back in with the dress.
Here is what mine looks like...
Convert to Raster and rename as dress
detail 1.
Go to selections select all, selections,
Float. Go to Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout and
apply these settings.... Color is #AC1454.
Select none. Now take your lasso tool
set to point to point and select the area on the
left side that has the cutout on it so
that it will blend back in to your dress.
Hit the delete key to remove that area
you have selected. Raise the Opacity back
to 100% on your dress layer so you can
make sure it blends in. This layer should
already be under your 2 wing layers but
if not move it so that it is.
SAVE!
20.)
Next will be the purple detail that is
under the scalloped one we just made. Make your
dress layer your active layer. Set your
background color to a contrasting color, I'm
using #926C90. Preset Shapes same as above.
Draw out another oval just like you
did for the scallop. Object Selector,
Right Click, Node Edit. Make some wave detail
on the right edge of this oval. Make the
left edge so that it will be hidden under the
scalloped layer. Convert to Raster and
rename as dress trim2. Go to Selections,
Select all, Selections, Float. Apply a
cutout using the settings above. I used the same
shadow color but if you don't like it
you can change it to a darker purple or black.
21.)
Now for the next scalloped edge. I think
you know now what to do. Change your
background color to your dress color.
Make a vector oval just like we did for the
other one. Then Node Edit until you have
a design that you like. Convert to Raster
rename as dress trim3. Select All,
Selection, Float. Apply the same cutout we used
above. Select None, then use the lasso
tool to select the area on the left and hit the
delete key to remove it. Remember you
can lower the Opacity on your dress so that
you can see what you're working on better.
Convert to Raster and rename as dress
trim3. If you need
to, save my banner image and bring it in to PSP so you can
look at the placement
and design on my dress as you work.
22.)
Next comes the purple again. Make your
dress layer your active layer. Change your
background color to the purple you used
#926C90. Set your Preset Shapes to a
rectangle and draw out a vertical one
the width of your dress. All you need to do to
it is shape it so it fits the contour
of your dress.
Convert to Raster and rename as dress
trim4. Select the layer just like we've done with
the others and apply the same cutout.
SAVE!
23.)
Now for the last scalloped layer. Make
your dress layer your active layer. Change your
background color to the color you used
for the collar, arm trim and bottom dress trim.
NOTE.. if you are familiar with the deformation
tool you can skip this and just duplicate
your dress trim layer, then mirror it
and use the deformation tool to align correct with
your dress. Otherwise use the Ellipse
Preset Shape and make another scallop like the
dress trim but with the scalloped end
facing to the left. Rename this layer to dress trim5.
Apply the same cutout to the dress trim
layer and dress trim5 that you applied to the
other scalloped layers.
24.)
As for the decorations on the rest of
your dress, I'm going to leave that part up to you.*L*
I use preset shapes, different line styles
and the paint brush to create the details on her
dress. I made each on it's own layer so
I could move them around or whatever if I
decided I didn't like it, remember to
name the layers as you go and to SAVE!
25.)
Make her shoe layer your active layer.
Set your foreground color to black. Draw Tool
set to these settings...
What we want to do with this is make a
line that will separate the shoe into two parts so
that it will look like a shoe and a sock.
By having Create as a vector checked you can set
your bezier Curve, then click on Object
selector and you can shape the line so that it will
curve around the bottom and look like
a shoe. Look at the screenshot below of a close up
of my finished shoe to see what I mean...
Convert to Raster when you're happy.
SAVE!
26.)
Make your shoe layer your active layer.
Add a new layer naming it sock.
Change your foreground to the blue we
are using #45BFC3. Use your paint brush to
paint in her sock. Go to Layers, View,
Select None. (a little trick Auntie Em found and
shared with me) This hides all your layers.
Now on your layer palette find the 3 shoe
layers and make only them visible. Merge
those 3 layers visible and rename to shoe.
Apply the cutout to it. Go back to Layers,View,
and make ALL your layers visible
again. (pretty cool huh?) Sure saves time
on having to hide all the layers one by one.
Thank Auntie Em next time you see her.
27.)
Okay, ya ready for the hair??? *LOL* I'm
not sure I'm ready to explain it, cuz silly me
forgot what settings I used to do it *L*
What I do remember though is making my hair
layer my active layer, going to Selections,
Select All, Selections, Float, then I went back
to Selections and Modify, Expand by 1.
Then I added a new layer. Set my Airbrush to
the settings I used to make her nose with,
except the size I set it to 75. My foreground
color was set to the brown #DBBCA1 I used
for the nose. Spray some of the color
around on the layer. Now change the color
to a darker brown #906022. Spray some dark
and light areas all around the hair. Now
go to Eye Candy 4000 fur and let's put some
strands in her hair. *L* The screenshot
below will show you the settings I used in EC.
I applied these several times changing
the direction and the fill color to different shades of
brown until I had something I liked. Just
play around you may find something you like
even more. Once you have it like you want,
then you can duplicate the layer and do a
different direction on settings in EC
to see what happens. Play around with changing
your lighting colors too while you're
in there! Don't be afraid to experiment, you can
always undo if you don't like it. Just
remember to SAVE
before you try something
new.....
Once you have the hair like you want it,
Go to Layers, View, None, this hides
all your layers. Look at your layer palette
and make only the hair layers visible.
Now merge them all visible. Go back to
Layers, View and click ALL. All your
layers will be back visible!
28.)
Now for playing with filters to make the
textures on the dress.
Make your dress layer your active layer.
On it I used the Texturizer filter set to...
I then reapplied the same setting but
changed the Lighting Direction to Right.
28b.)
I made active the scalloped layers that
are the same color as the dress and applied
the same texturizer settings to them so
that they would blend into the dress.
29.)
The filter I used for the arm, the wings,
the purple trim layers, and the bottom blue layer
of her dress is the Weave filter in PSP7.
I used a darker color of the colors that I was
weaving and played with the different
gap and width sizes. Make each layer active and
apply the weave however you like it or
try a different filter.
Once you have all the layers with the
textures you like you can start applying the cutout
we used on the other layers to each layer.
Making your shadow color a darker color of the
color you want to shade or staying with
the color we used on the other shadings. Once you
have the cutout on wing2 you can duplicate
that layer and rotate it if you want a second wing
like I have on mine. I then used the draw
tool on different line styles to add some extra
detail to the dress. Add them each on
their own layer.
30.)
Next I used the Preset Shape Heart to
add some hearts to her dress and wing. I then used the
heart to make a large one that she could
hold. I applied the Texturizer filter to the hearts.
31.) Next I used the draw tool set to freehand,
size 2, color black, and added a layer under
my large heart so I could draw 2 string
lines from my heart to her hand, making a loop like
the string is tied in a bow.
32.) I then used a couple of the hearts
that I made for her dress and placed them on
the large heart. I used the deformation
tool to rotate them. I add another layer and applied
my text to my heart. I took my text to
Effects, 3D effects, Chisel with these settings..
I then went to Layers, View, None, then
made visible the layers of my large heart and
merged them visible. Then I took the heart
to Effects, 3D Effects, Inner Bevel and applied these
setting...
Make all layer visible again.
33.)
Now for the halo.
Make your hair layer your active layer,
add a new layer. I used the rope tube to make her
halo with. I set the rope tube to size
85 and changed the step on it to 15 and drew around
her hair in the style of a halo. I then
went to Colors, Colorize. I set Hue to 240 and
Saturation to 126.
34.)
Last step, *L* I used vectors to make
her a flowing bow. I didn't make a screenshot
of the bow. I don't really like my bow,
so I'm sure you can make a much better one
than I did. As you can see I applied the
Texturizer to the bow as well and a cutout.
That's it, you can save this angel unmerged
to colorize her and use for something else
other than Valentine's if you wish. She's
finished, so merge all your layers visible and
save however you want or tube her. Please
remember to resize before sending in to
FBN or any other group that has a limit
on size!
Thanks for doing the tute, I hope you have
enjoyed it and have learned something!
Until next time,
