Tuscany Glass Pitcher

This tutorial is rated 10+ due to
the intense shading, and the use
of vectors.

This tutorial was written by request. After doing my candle tutorial Clara asked me
to do more tuts along the line of shading and suggested that I do one of Tuscany Glass.
Thanks Clara for the inspiration to do this.
Due to the number of screenshots I have used I decided this tutorial needed to be on
two pages.
This tutorial is written using PSP7 so all screenshot and tool location will be for 7.
Some screenshots have been resized and or compressed to save on load time.
Note PSP6 users.. you will be able to do this tutorial but with some slight differences
due to the filters. I've tried to provide instructions for 6 users on how to get the effects
that 7 has.

1.) Open a new canvas 400x500
Set background color to #FDC78D
PSP7 users foreground color should be off.
Preset Shapes to these settings..
Ellipse
Create as vector and antialias both Checked
line size doesn't matter.
PSP6... filled

Draw out a vertical oval on your canvas. Setting it off to the left some so that we will have room for
our handle later.

2.) Click on the Object Selector, right click on your canvas and choose Node Edit.
Start with the top node. Zoom in so you can see. On the left side of the original top node add a new node.
On the right side add 2 new nodes. Look at the screenshots below to see the placement of the nodes.
Change node style to Cusp for better angling of the arrows.

3.) Now move down the sides of your pitcher looking at the screenshot above to see where I've
placed nodes.
Continue down the sides of the pitcher to the bottom. Screenshots below, of placement of nodes and
how they should be manipulated. Remember to change node style to Cusp where needed.

Now would be a good time to save what you've done. Save as a psp file, then every couple of steps
save. Emily, this means you, save NOW! *giggle* (A little joke between Auntie Em and I. She throws
horse apples at me when she is testing one of my tuts and forgets to save and loses it due to a crash.)

4.)Convert to Raster when you're happy with the look. Rename to front pitcher.

5.) Change background color to #EEB37A
Preset Shapes, same as above.
Across the top of your pitcher draw out an oval from left to right. This will be the inner rim of the
pitcher.
Object Selector, right click on canvas, choose Node Edit.
Let's start with the middle node closest to the rim of the pitcher. We want to manipulate this line to
match our lines on the front of the pitcher. Add nodes as needed and change style to Cusp. Make it
just a tad larger than your pitcher is on the inside rim area, we will move this layer behind our front
layer when we are finished. Move around the rim adding nodes where needed shaping as you go until
you have something like the screenshots below. Look at the screenshots below to see the placement
of my nodes and how I moved them.

Convert to Raster and rename as inner rim. Move this layer below your front pitcher layer.
Click that Save!!

6.) Now for our handle. Change background color to #413E9F
Preset Tools, same settings.
To the right of your pitcher draw out and oval from about where the O ends in Astro in the above
second image down to about the middle of the pitcher. Look at the screenshots below. I found it
easier to use a solid ellipse rather than the line. Remember when you were in school and would
doodle around with making block shaped letters? Well think of the handle sorta like that. We want to
make somewhat of half a block heart. *L* Note the nodes and how I manipulated them in the
screenshots below. Remember, changing the style to Cusp helps get a smoother turn on your nodes.

Convert to Raster, rename as handle. Move this layer below your front pitcher layer.

We are finished for the most part with vectors, now comes the fun part! *L*
If you'd like to save the basic pitcher for use later, Go to Window, Duplicate.
Save this duplicate unmerged as a psp file. You can play around with colors later on it.
Now back to the original. Did you save the changes to it too? If not do it now!

Ready? Let's move on.
I know shading is hard but with practice you can get some amazing results.

7.) Make front pitcher layer your active layer. Go to Selection, Select All, Selections Float.
Add a new layer naming it shading.
Set your foreground color to #F77534.
PSP7 users, background color should be off.

8.) Click on your Airbush Tool with these settings..
Round
Size.. 17
Hardness.. 25
Opacity.. 34
Step.. 13
Density.. 26

Look at the screenshot below to see where and how I've sprayed this color on my pitcher.

9.) Now change your foreground color to #DB3421
On the same layer spray this color around like in the screenshot below..

Save!!

10.) Change foreground color to #F1913F and spray around on the same layer covering the
middle area that has no color on it. Like this..

11.) Last color for this layer. Change foreground to #5D2821
Spray this color around the bottom of the pitcher. Angled from the left side going
down like this..

Save!!

Now let's apply some filters so that we won't get a cramp trying to smudge all those
colors *L*
All through this leave the area selected!
6 users next step for you is below this one in blue..

12.) First Go to Effects,
Blur,
Gaussian Blur
Radius of 8

Next go to..
Effects
Noise
Salt and Pepper Filter
Use these settings..

12b.) For PSP 6 users ONLY, this is where your results will start to differ.
The look we are after is like the screenshot below. You can use the Retouch Tool,
changing between smudge, push, and soften with these other settings..

13.) Back to 7 users.
Go to
Effects
Noise
Median Filter
Apply these settings...

Save!!
13.b) PSP6 Users Only.. Go to
Image
Noise
Median Cut and apply
Apply this cut 3 times.

14.) Back to 7 users..
Go to Effects,
geometric Effects
Warp
Apply these settings.

14b.) PSP6 Users Only..
Go to Images
Deformations
Warp
And apply the above settings that 7 users applied.

15.) Now both 6 and 7 users..
Hide all layers except front pitcher, and shading layer. Merge the two layers visible,
rename to front pitcher. The image should still be selected, but go to Selections and
click on Float.
Go to your filters and find your Fantastic Machines, Paint Engine. The screenshot below
shows the settings. Once you have the drop down menu set to texture streak move the slider
scales to the setting I have here. Type, set to Selected, Input and Line both checked.

You should have something that looks like this now...

Save!!
