Let me first recommend that you do my second lesson making a table in Front Page if you do not know how to setup a
single cell table already. This tute will walk you through how to setup a multi cell table using Front Page 2002. The
screenshots in this tutorial is of FP 2002 but older versions of FP can follow along but there might be a few options
you do not have, such as justify text.1.) First open Front Page, you should have something that looks like this...
2.) Go to File, "Save As" and name your new page, I named mine cells.html and placed it on my desktop. You can
name yours whatever you'd like and place it anywhere you'd like but put it in a place you can find easily!
Note...When you "Save As" you have a list of different extensions you can save from, if you prefer html, then
add the l to the htm and it will save it as that.
3.) Go through and setup your font type, color, and your link colors. Add a background color or tile if you wish!
If you do not know how to do this refer to my lesson 1 on setting up a simple webpage.4.) Let's make a table now! Look at the screenshot of the Toolbar below, see where the arrow is?
Left click on the icon, the boxes shown in the screenshot above should open, select the second row, second table,
this is a 2X2 table. This sets the table with two cells across and two cells down. You should have a table that looks
like the one below, except yours will be larger on the page.
5,) Go to your Toolbar and click on "Table", Table Properties, Table, a box like this will appear...
Let's go through setting up our "Layout" first. Click on the drop down menu beside "Alignment". Most often
you will set this to "center" Leave "Float" on "Default". "Specify width" should be checked and so should
"In percent". If you set your table to percent it will adjust to fit whatever size monitor the person viewing
the page has. You can change the percentage of the table by lowering the 100. A good normal size is 80.6.) Next is "Cell padding" and "Cell Spacing" These two set the padding and spacing that your border will
have around it and that it will have in between each cell. These can be set to 0 if you do not want your
border to have them but lets set them to 2 for this tute.7.) Now let's make our settings under "Borders". The "size" sets the border size that is around the table.
Sometimes you may not want a border around it, so you can set this to 0 if you want but if you do then the
"cell padding" and "cell spacing" also needs to be set to 0. For this lesson let's set the Size to 3.8.) Next comes the "color". Using the drop down menu, you can set this to any color you'd like the border
around your table to be.
9.) Look under "Background" "Color", this is where you can set a color for the background within your table.
When set to Automatic the table color will be whatever color or tile you have your page background set to!
Once you have you table set like you want it click OK and exit table setup.10.) Click so that your mouse cursor is inside the top left cell of your table, then right click and select "cell
properties" a box like the one below should appear.
In this box under "Layout", "Horizontal alignment" you can set how your text will appear in your table. You can
set it to be left, right, center, or justified aligned. My text in this table is set to left align but I also set my
text on the toolbar to "Increase Indent" so that my text would not be right on my table line. How you want yours
set is up to you. Most times you'll probably want it set to center.11.) "Vertical Alignment" In this drop down you have a choice of setting where in the page you want your
text/images to start. Normally you will want to set this to "Top" but play around with the different setting to
see what suits your needs best. Once you have your table set like you want, click OK to exit cell setup.
Note... once you click apply, this sets your choices in your table, if you do not like what you've chosen you
will need to close the cell box by clicking OK or Cancel, then go to Edit and click undo. The you can go back to
the cell box and change the settings.12.) You will need to click inside each cell and change the properties within each one. When working with Multi
cell tables you can set each cell to whatever size you want them to be as long as the total size of each cell will
end up equaling 100 percent of the size you set your table at. Let's play around with that a little...13.) The table below is an example of a table you might like to make for your site that has a navigation area in
one small cell to the left and a larger cell that can have your welcome and anything else you'd like to have on the
page. For it I made a 2 celled table (1x2), like this...
14.) I then set my table Properties by going to Table, Table Properties, Table. I set the over all size I wanted
my table to be on the page (for this I chose 80 percent) but if you're making it to use, for a main page you will
probably want it set to at least 90 or 95 percent and maybe even 100 percent. I also set my alignment to center,
my cell padding and spacing to 0, my border size to 3 and to the color I wanted my border to be.15.) I then right clicked inside my cell on the left and set my "cell properties".
Because I wanted the left cell to be small, I set mine to 20 percent and I also set my alignments to center and
Top. When working with cells I found it's best to set all cells to Vertical Align at Top, it's easier to switch
between cells when you have them set that way. I then right clicked inside my right cell and set it to 80 percent
and to center horizontal align and to Top vertical align.16.) Once you have your cells set then you can add your text and images!
Note... to make a single down space between text/images, hold the Shift key and press Enter.
I hope this tutorial has shown you how easy it can be to setup a multi cell table using Front Page. It's really fun
to play around with tables to get different looks, you can also create tables within tables and all sorts of neat
things!
Until next time,
God Bless!
