Tutorial written November 18, 2006.
This tutorial is written using PSP X but can done in other version with a little
modification of tool locations. The Ragged Anne doll is from a tutorial by Ginny.
The Penguin is from a tutorial I did a very long time ago, I don't think it's available
anymore. If it is and you know the URL please mail it to me and I will be happy to
link to it.
The daisy and bow are ones I did a long time ago. You can download them here if you
would like to use them or you can use your own. I can't remember if I followed a
tutorial to make my bow or not....
Bow Zip
Daisy ZipThis is a vector tutorial so a working knowledge of PSP and vectors will come in handy.
I don't recommend this tutorial for true newbies. If this is your first time vectoring,
I suggest you give my Vectors 101 tutes a try first before attempting this tutorial.
You can find them listed on my Tutorial Index page. This is a fairly long tutorial but those that are comfortable with vectoring should be
able to work through it pretty fast.
Remember to SAVE OFTEN!Let's get started!
1. Open a 500X600 transparent canvas. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Head.
2. Set your background color to #f7ceaf, foreground should be off.
3. Preset Shapes set to Ellipse with these settings.....
4. Draw out a circle in the top center of your canvas....
5. Convert to Raster.
6. Selections, Select All, Selections, Float.
7. Effects, 3D Effects, Cutout. Apply these settings.....
Shadow color #936b3d
8. Make Raster 1 Layer your active layer. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Neck.
Same Preset Shape and settings. Same skin tone color.9. Draw a small oval, allow the top part of the oval to be behind her head...
10. Right Click on the oval, Convert to path. Click on the Pen Tool.
11. Bring the top center node down, almost to the bottom of the head but not all the way...
This step doesn't seem that important but will make a difference
when a cutout is applied.12. Convert to Raster.
13. Select and Float the Neck. Apply a Cutout using the settings for the Head except, change
the Opacity to 90 and the Blur to 22.14. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Dress. I'm going to leave the color choice up to you. If
you want to use my blue it's #0a469c and my red is #800000. Set your color as the
background color, foreground should be off.15. Preset Shapes set to Rectangle, other settings the same as we used for the head and neck.
16. Draw out a long rectangle just below her neck...
17. Right click on the rectangle, Convert to path. Click on the Pen Tool.
18. Add two nodes on the top center line so that they are on each side of the neck....
19. Right click on the left node. Change the node type to Curve After. Right click on the
right node and change the type to Curve Before. Pull the handles on the right and left node
down to follow the contour of her neck...
20. Change the left top and bottom corner nodes to Cusp. Note, you will first need to change
it to Symmetric or Asymmetric before you will be able to change it to Cusp.21. Add a node between the top left corner and the bottom left corner nodes...
22. Shape the left side of your dress something like this....
23. Follow the same steps to shape the right side of the dress....
24. You now have Jenny Lynn's basic dress. I saved an extra copy as I went a long making
the pieces leaving the vectors in tact for the dress, arms, leg and apron so that I could change
Jenny's outfit to fit whatever look I wanted her to have. She can be an all season/ holiday
girl! *L*25. Convert the Dress layer to Raster.
26. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Apron. Set your background color to a color that
matches her dress. The green I used is #23873c27. Preset Shapes set to Rectangle, same settings we used for the dress.
28. Draw out a long rectangle on top of her dress. Right click, Convert to path. Click on the Pen
Tool.29. Just like we did with the dress, add two nodes at the neck and two nodes at the waist, change
the type on each of the nodes to Cusp.30. Use the nodes to shape the apron something like this....
31. For this tutorial, I didn't do the scalloped edge on her apron but I did for the Christmas
version of her, you can too if you want. Just add nodes, changing the type where needed to
scallop the end of the apron.32. Convert the apron to raster.
33. Add a new Vector Layer naming it belt. Set your background color to #ffff80. Preset
shapes set to the rectangle setting.34. At her waist, draw a narrow rectangle. Right click, Convert to path. Click on the Pen
Tool. Zoom in so you can see better, move the top node and the bottom node on both sides so
that they follow the line of the dress. Change all 4 node types to Cusp. Use the handles to
shape the belt something like this...
35. Convert the layer to raster.
36. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Dress Bottom. Background color and Preset
Shape, same as for the belt.37. Draw a narrow rectangle a long the bottom of her dress....
38. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool. Zoom in!
39. Change all 4 node types to Cusp. Using the existing nodes, shape the bottom of the dress
something like this....
40. To do the check on the bottom of her dress was hard and very time consuming. I vectored each
square so that it would fit the angle of the bottom of the dress. I won't go through the steps here
because your angle will not be the same as mine. If you want yours to be checked then do each
square now following the contour of the bottom of the dress. You can convert them to raster and
merge the check layer with the bottom yellow layer of your dress when you're finished....
Note of you're making the Christmas version you can make the bottom in the red of her dress, then
make a scalloped green layer on top of it.41. Make Raster 1 your active layer. Set your background color to the green. Add a new Vector Layer
naming it Left Leg.42. Preset Shapes set to the rectangle setting.
43. Draw out a long narrow rectangle at the left bottom of her dress....
44. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool.
45. Change the top left node to Cusp. Pull down on the bottom of the arrow to make a slight arch
in the leg. Square off the top handle of the node so that the top of the leg is straight. Change the
right bottom node type to Symmetric, adjust the handles so that the corner slightly rounds...
46. Convert to Raster. Copy and Paste as a New Layer. Mirror the layer and move into position.
Rename as Right Leg.47. Set your background color to Black. Preset Shapes set to the Ellipse setting we've used in this
tutorial.48. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Left Shoe.
49. Draw out an oval at the bottom of the left leg....
50. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool.
51. Add nodes, changing the type to Cusp where needed to shape your shoe something like this...
52. Convert to Raster. Duplicate and Mirror the layer, move into position and rename as
Right Shoe.53. Make your top layer your active layer. Set your background color to the blue of the dress.
54. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Left Arm. Preset Shapes set to Ellipse.
55. Draw out an oval. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool.
56. By adding one new node and changing the type to Cusp where needed, I was able to shape my
arm like this......
57. Convert to Raster. Duplicate and Mirror, move into position, rename as Right Arm.
58. Make the layer below your two arm layers your active layer. Add a New Vector Layer naming
it Left Hand.59. Set your background color to the skin tone we used for the Head and Neck. #f7ceaf
60. Preset Shapes set to the Ellipse setting.
61. Draw out a small oval at the left sleeve. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool.
62. By added nodes and changing the type to Cusp where needed, I shaped my hand. Instead of
making an open hand with fingers, I made mine so that only the knuckles showed...
63. Convert to Raster. Select and Float your hand. Apply a Cutout using these settings....
64. Duplicate and Mirror the hand, move into position and rename as Right Hand.
65. Make the top Layer your active Layer. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Hair1 Left.
66. Set your foreground color to #462105 and your background color to #7b3c0b.
67. Preset Shapes set to Ellipse with these settings......
68. At the left side of her head draw out an oval. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool.
69. Using the existing nodes and only changing the right side node to Cusp, I was able to shape my
hair like this....
70. Convert to Raster. Duplicate and Mirror, move into position and rename as Hair1 Right.
71. Make your Neck layer your active layer. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Hair2 Left.
72. Same settings and color. Draw out another oval at the bottom of the first hair oval...
73. Right click, Convert to path, click on the Pen Tool.
74. Shape the oval something like this...
75. Convert to Raster. Duplicate and Mirror, move into position and rename as Hair2 Right.
76. Make your top Layer your active layer. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Hair3 Left.
77. I first started with a small oval in the center. I then added more ovals below the center oval
rotating them as I went, to make the braid of her hair...
78. At the bottom of her braid, add a New Vector Layer naming it Hair4 Left. Made an oval and
added a couple of nodes to shape the end of the braid like this...
79. Merge the Hair3 Left layer with Hair4 Left layer, rename as Left Braid. Duplicate
and Mirror the layer, rename as Right Braid and move into position.80. If you have a bow you'd like to use, you can colorize it to match your outfit and add
it to the braids like I did....
81. If you don't have a bow, you can use the one I made, you can download it at the top of the page.
Open in PSP. You can export as a tube and colorize to whatever color you want.82. Make your top layer your active layer. Add a New Vector Layer naming it Left Eye.
83. Set your background color to #055004 or you may want to use a blue or brown for the eyes,
it's up to you.84. Preset Shapes set to Ellipse. Draw out a small oval for the left eye. Convert to Raster.
85. Set your foreground color to white. Click on the Paint Brush and set to these settings...
86. Click once to make a tiny speck in her eye...
87. Add a New Vector Layer. Set your foreground color to black, your background should be off.
Click on the Pen Tool and set to these settings...
88. Click once at the top left corner of the eye to start your line, click again to end your line. Change
the node type to Symmetric, use the handle to arch the eye lash something like this...
89. Convert the line to Raster. Copy and Paste as a New Selection to make a second lash...
90. Close all your layers except the eye and the lash layers, merge them together visible, rename
as Left Eye. Duplicate and Mirror the layer, rename and move into position as Right Eye.91. Use the Pen Tool with the same settings as for the eye lash to make a cute arched mouth....
That's it, you now have Sweet Jenny Lynn. You can apply shading and cutouts to her layers.
You can also add decorations to her apron and add something in her hands for her to hold.I have shown you two versions of Sweet Jenny Lynn as the header image but you can dress her many
different ways. By changing the colors of her outfit and adding a bonnet, she would make a cute
Easter girl or you could dress her as Valentine girl or even a birthday girl.I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial.
Until next time, God Bless!
