In Loving Memory of Mary Newton

"A Parable of Immortality"
by Henry Van Dyke
sent in by Sherilynn
I am standing upon the
seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue
ocean,
She is an object of beauty
and strength and I stand and watch her until
at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud where
the sea and the
sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side
says, "There, she's gone,"
Gone where? Gone from my
sight, that is all. She is just as large in
mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my
side, and just as
able to bear her load of living weight to the place of
destination. Her
diminished size is in me, not in her; and just as that
moment when
someone at my side said, "There, she's gone," there are
other eyes
watching her coming and other voices to take the glad
shout,
"There, she's coming!"

The above photo was taken
of Mary in April 2003 at a restaurant called Charlie's
where she celebrated her birthday with her family.

Below are tributes to Mary
from friends from all over the world that knew and
loved her.

How do you put into words
what a friend means to you.... that's like trying to
explain the
emotions of love to a robot. Mary was a dear friend for
several years, we first met as
members of a small friendship group. When meeting Mary
you were drawn to her like
a comfy chair (I can hear her chuckle at me saying that
about her), she made you
feel so good about yourself and always knew exactly
what to say to make you laugh,
encourage or comfort you. With her caring words and
her sharp wit she would have
you laughing and crying with delight. Her presence
spanned an ocean, you felt like
she was sitting right there next to you! So many times
I mailed her asking for a favor
or for her opinion about something and in reply I would
get back just what I asked for
or needed to hear. There will always be an emptiness
inside of me without Mary, but
I can hear her telling me "cry your tears for a bit,
then dry them and go on and
remember me with a smile on your face" ..... I will
Mary, because of you I am
a better person. Sleep well my friend until we meet
again.

"THE
WALRUS AND THE CARPENTER"
by Lewis Carroll
"The Walrus and the Carpenter walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock...conveniently low:
And all the little oysters stood and waited in a row."
"The time has come" the walrus said,
"To talk of many things":
Of shoes and ships and sealing wax
Of cabbages and kings and why the sea is boiling hot
and whether pigs have wings.
*
My tribute may seem a
little odd to some of you, but it would make Mary
laugh. I made
this pig for her awhile back because she would always
jokingly say "when pigs fly" .
One of her dreams was to visit her friends in the USA
and when talking about it she
would say when she won the lottery she would use the
money to visit us, then would
go on to say that that day would be when pigs could
fly. So one day I made her this
angel pig as a joke to show her pigs could fly. She
laughed so hard when I
showed her the flying pig. If she is watching now I
hope it brings
a smile in remembrance of the fun we shared!
...With love, Connie (Astro)

My
dear, Geordie friend....how I will miss you.
My world is a brighter, shinier place for just your
presence in it.
The talents I posess have grown because of you.
My life is enriched by having known you.
I will smile when I speak your name.
I sense your thoughts inside my head, my bonza mate.
*g*
That sweet, lopsided grin smiles back at me.
I will hold you close in my heart forever.
I will picture you always in my mind
Relishing the joys of a childhood summer
On a wonderful day so warm, so mild.

and her brother, used to love the place pictured in
this graphic.
They were born and lived nearby and played here as
children.
The bench has a plaque and inscription which is
dedicated to her
brother's memory. You can find more memories she shared
of
growing up in England by clicking on the graphic.

too swift for those who fear,
too long for those who grieve,
too short for those who rejoice,
but for those who love, time is eternity."

Over
the years that I knew her, Mary and I shared quite a
few of our funny stories
with each other. Unfortunately, she was often the
recipient of some things she
didn't necessarily want....*LOL*...ergo, the Pattie
Pulverizer! One day she posted the
results of the Antique Book tutorial on our Cafe Menu
for that month. She used as
her example image, a children's book....the title was
something like
"The Rabbits of Happy Valley". Not being one to let a
good thing go to waste,
instead of a "Good work!" reply to her, I sent some
silly comment about
wanting to know what the Rabbits did
in Happy Valley.
Well....the rest is almost history...and a story for
her grandchildren too.
We managed to get it this far, but couldn't keep it up
enough to finish the story.
Here's what we sent back and forth to each other for
several days after that
(Mary's words in blue, mine in purple):
"The Rabbits of Happy
Valley"
by Mary Newton and Emily Austin
Once upon a time there lived a family of Bunny
Rabbits. Their tiny home was deep in a great
big forest, where also......
......lived a pleasant little family of hedgehogs.
Matilda Hedgehog and Papa and their four young ones
had just begun an addition to their new house in
the base of the old oak tree in the big
woods........
....but their dream home was now under threat of
collapsing, due to the obnoxious Mole family who
lived close by. The moles had tunnelled their
way through to the foundations of the Hedgehog
family's house and now all Papa's hard
work over the last few months was wasted.
Matilda was so furious that she wrote a letter to
the............
.......editor of the local newspaper, The Happy
Valley Gazette, asking all their neighbors to meet
with them at the community center on Friday night.
She hoped that with the help of all the neighbors,
something could be done about the tunnelling that
was threatening to undermine not just their home,
but the whole of the valley. When that Friday
night arrived, the Mole family was.......
....booed by the very angry crowds and pelted with
putrid ferret turds. The Mayor of
Forestville, which was a suburb of Happy
Valley, appeared on the angry scene and ordered
them to stop their despicable behaviour as they
were only making the situation worse.
Suddenly, the quiet was broken by one of the local
residents, Auntie Em of the Lion Brigade...
......accompanied by her friend Lady Oz of the
Down-Unders.
Auntie said: "The mayor is right, we're getting
nowhere by behaving in this manner. We must think
of a solution for both the Moles and the rest of
the townspeople! Perhaps if we helped the moles
with their construction, the whole of the valley
would not be endangered anymore." Lady Oz nodded
her head in agreement. Percival Badger, an engineer
by trade, spoke up and said........
......I am willing to lend my
services and I know just the builder to employ to
help us in this project, he's a bit of a wily
character so we will have to watch his expenses,
however, he is a master builder is our Fred Fox.
Everyone agreed that this was the way to go
including Lady Oz who continued to nod her head,
causing Auntie Em to roll her eyes to the heavens.
Just then, Stanley Stoat, who was late for the
meeting, came running in with alarming news for
them all.......

Mary
Newton, what a special person she was! She always had
time to help and
gave so much of herself. She was truly the Cafe'
cheerleader and worked so hard
to make this group a special place to be. She was a
kind, loving person and was
admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. I
think my favorite thing
about Mary was her sense of humor! We all know about
the *cow pies* that fly
around the Cafe, right? In an email one day she had
said she had gotten in
some much needed PSP playtime and she was *going to
have to pay* for it
by ducking cow pies, lol ! I made her a can of "Cow
Pie Repellent" and sent it
to her to help. Well, wouldn't you know about 20
minutes later she sent the can
back animated with a very detailed description about
how she had made
the actual *pie* LOL That........ was Mary!!
I will miss her dearly and my heartfelt sympathy goes
out to Mel and the
rest of her family and her many friends.
*very big hugs to you, Mary*

Mary......full of fun, always there when help was
needed, a very talented
lady, and a true friend.
Mary will be missed by her friends all over the world!
Limerick for Mary
There was a fair lady from Oz,
Who always received our applause.
She shared talent and wit,
Her tutes were a hit.
She was tops at those vector line draws!!
That fun, cheery lady from Oz, from Oz.
That Newtonian Mary from Oz.
.....With Love, Hannah

I,
like all of us, am going to miss our dear friend so
deeply.....At
a time like this when someone leaves us so suddenly, it
is hard to
grasp the reality. She is safely in heaven that I know,
and as Gradie
told me, she will welcome us all there someday. But as
the song goes.
" I always thought I'd see you again"..Mary ..here on
earth.........you
left us much too soon!! I will think of you often with
wonderful
memories...........you were and will remain an
inspiration to me.
Your wit, your kindness, your talent will always be
with me. Thank you
for giving us you!! My heart goes out to Mel, and the
children and
those sweet grandchildren.Though we never met, I know
that if this email
can fly through the air to the Cafe, it will fly to you
too!
......Love and hugs forever.....Hannah

Words on paper - casual times -
Friendship growing with each line;
Slowly, carefully, seeking truth,
Deep, abiding - past our youth.
Love that grows so carefully
On the wings of destiny -
Such was ours - a friendship rare,
Brought by e-mails through the air.
So, can love grow on such a breeze?
Through the clouds or through the trees?
It was love we shared together -
Love born in those e-mail letters.
How I miss familiar notes
And those great familiar quotes;
Love of country and fellow men -
Pulling the folks together again.
Our hopes and prayers we shared with ease,
Our dreams and radiant memories.
It meant so much - I loved it so -
Never dreaming you would go.
My e-mail’s missing one dear name;
I wish that I could see again....
We spoke with ease of feelings true...
Sweet e-mail friend....I do...miss you....

The
history of Percy...
Mary
went on a fishing trip one day with her family
and took some wonderful pictures of a friendly pelican
who was hanging out with them on the pier. She told us
she had
started calling him Percy. Em made a PSP tube out of
one of the photos
and sent it to her. At that point, she mentioned that
he would make a good mascot
for the Cafe. He did, indeed, and has been our mascot
ever since.
You never know when or where he might show up.

Percy
says there's one page on Mary's site that he
particularly likes.
It speaks of catching a big fish.
There's nothing he likes better than that.
Thou shalt have a fishy on a little dishy.

The
poem on bottom of Mary's page was a familiar Nursery
Rhyme to her.
To hear a small part of it sung in Mary's native
Geordie tongue, click on Percy above.
